How to Fix Scratches on Natural Cherry Kitchen Cabinets

Natural cherry cabinets in your kitchen may look stunning. According to Woodworking.com, cherry wood is popular in part due to its ability to darken in color over time and after use. Scratches may occur due to accidentally hitting the surface with silverware or dishes or through improper cleaning. While the scratches cannot removed, you can make them less noticeable by repairing them and making the scratched section better blend with the rest of the natural wood.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

  1. Using Shoe Polish

    • 1

Wipe the cabinet clean with a damp cloth and allow to air dry.

    • 2

Dab a soft cloth into a small amount of cordovan-colored shoe polish. (Dark reddish shoe polish also works.)

    • 3

Fill the scratch with shoe polish. Lightly rub over the scratch in a circular motion to work the shoe polish in and blend it into the wood surface.

    • 4

Allow the polish to dry and repeat as needed on additional scratches or over the same scratch to further minimize its visibility.

    Using Darkened Iodine

    • 5

Clean off the cabinet surface with a clean damp cloth. Wait for the cabinet to dry.

    • 6

Dip one tip of the cotton swab in the darkened iodine. Allow the excess to drip off.

    • 7

Run the cotton swab through the scratch lightly to fill the scratch with iodine. Allow the iodine to dry and repeat a few times to fill the scratch.
