How to Hook Up a Fridge

Many modern fridges come with automatic ice makers that require a hookup. The ice maker needs a constant supply of water to operate correctly. You could hire someone to come hook up your fridge for you for a fee, but if you want to save some money and you’re handy with a wrench, you can do the hookup on your own.

Things You'll Need

  • Screwdriver
  • Wrench
  • 1/4-inch anchor clamp (comes with refrigerator)
  • 1/4-inch compression nut (comes with refrigerator)
  • 1/4-inch compression sleeve (comes with refrigerator)
  • Roll of Teflon tape

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the back grate of the refrigerator to reveal the wiring and connections. Find the water solenoid valve, which looks like a colorful plastic tube shaped to receive a water pipe. This is the valve that receives water and sends it into the ice maker.

    • 2

Slide the anchor clamp onto the water pipe. The water pipe is a flexible piece of copper that extends from the water faucet under your sink. If you don’t have one, you need a licensed plumber to safely do the connections to your water faucet.

    • 3

Slide your compression nut onto the pipe followed by the compression sleeve. Add a bit of Teflon tape around the compression sleeve to ensure that it stays in place.

    • 4

Slide the anchor clamp and nut back down over the Teflon tape. Connect the pipe opening to the water solenoid valve in the back of the refrigerator. Tighten the nut down on the valve with a wrench.

    • 5

Position the anchor clamp over one of the small open holes at the edge of the back of the refrigerator. Add a screw through the opening of the clamp into the hole and tighten it to keep the water pipe in place.

    • 6

Plug in your refrigerator and carefully slide it back into its position next to the wall.
