How to Make a Wall-Mounted Wood Spice Rack

Woodworking and cooking are both rewarding hobbies. Bring the two together by making a relatively easy project that is an essential piece of equipment in any prolific cook's kitchen. Build your own wall-mounted wood spice rack with enough shelf space for all your specialized cooking spices. A spice rack hung on the wall eliminates the problem of unorganized spices taking up much needed cabinet space and it does not require lengths of wall space either.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate two consecutive studs in your kitchen along the wall where you want to place the spice rack. Mark the found studs with a pencil.

    • 2

Cut a 1/4-inch rabbet into one edge of two 12-inch long, 1-by-2-inch popular wood board using a table saw. Cut a 1/4-inch rabbet into both ends of both 12-inch boards leaving only one edge of the board without a rabbet. The rabbets must be on the same side of the boards.

    • 3

Cut a 1/4-inch rabbet into one lengthwise edge of two 17-inch long,1-by-2-inch popular boards.

    • 4

Mark the 12-inch boards with a pencil four inches from one end and eight inches from the same end. Cut dadoes into these places using the 1/4-inch table saw blade. Cut twice to make a ½-inch dado in each marked spot.

    • 5

Place wood glue into all rabbets on all wood boards. Place one 17-inch board inside the rabbets on one end of the 12-inch boards so the lengthwise rabbets on all three boards connect and the three boards make three sides of a box.

    • 6

Slide a 12-by-17-inch plywood board into the rabbets on the three boards. Use your hand or a rubber mallet to pound the plywood into the three boards. Place the second 17-inch board on the open space, into the rabbets on the 12-inch boards, making a box. Hammer 1½-inch nails into the back plywood board along the edges at 1-inch intervals.

    • 7

Clamp the box together by placing a clamp on both ends of the 12-inch boards and on both ends of the 17-inch boards. Allow the glue to dry for at least an hour.

    • 8

Place glue into the dadoes on the 12-inch boards. Insert two 17-inch long 1-by-2-inch boards, making shelves, into the dadoes and pound them down with your hand or a rubber mallet.

    • 9

Place glue along the front of the shelves and place a ½-by-17-inch slat on the front of each shelf, flat creating a block to keep the spices on the shelf. Hammer a 1½-inch nail into the ends and at two places long the front. Allow the glue to dry for about an hour.

    • 10

Stain the spice rack with wood stain using a sponge to keep it from pooling in the corners. Allow to dry for at least an hour.

    • 11

Place the spice on the wall. Screw the spice rack to the two studs you located earlier using two 2-inch screws and a cordless drill. The spice rack is 17 inches wide and the studs are 16 inches apart. Mark a small dot on top of your spice rack ½-inch in from each end to help you know where to screw the spice rack.
