How to Dampen the Closure of Cabinet Doors

As some of the most high-traffic areas in the kitchen, cabinets serve as both an overwhelming visual presence and a necessary storage option. The banging of cabinet doors against cabinet walls is an all-too-familiar sound for homes with older cabinets, particularly when the family includes several children. Installing dampers is an excellent way to minimize the harshness of this sound, and is much cheaper than replacing the entire hinge assembly with a modern, noise-free version. This job can be done almost completely without tools and with minimal purchase of equipment.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the cabinet doors, and clean the interior edges of each door using the cloth. Wipe down the contact surfaces of the door that strike the cabinet to remove any dust or dirt which may interfere with the stickiness of the dampers.

    • 2

Open and close each cabinet door to determine which surface strike the cabinets first with the strongest connection. This is especially important with older, potentially warped cabinets in which some surfaces may be many millimeters from contact. Mark these points of contact with a pencil on the inside of the door.

Cut the furniture floor-protection strips into 2-inch pieces, and remove the adhesive backing on the rear of each strip. Attach a strip to each point of contact, with no more than three or four strips evenly spaced on each door. Press the strip firmly to the cabinet door for at least 30 seconds to ensure a long-term connection.

Test the damping action of the strips by opening and then loudly closing the cabinet door. Add additional strips to balance the door if necessary. Repeat this process for each cabinet as needed.
