How to Antique Glaze French Cabinet Doors

Remove the cabinet doors and hardware. Label the doors with number sticky notes and place the hardware and screws into a plastic container. Set the cabinet doors onto a plastic tarp in a well-ventilated area.

Slip on a pair of rubber gloves, safety goggles and a respirator. Create a mixture of one tablespoon tri-sodium phosphate, or TSP, and one-half gallon warm water. TSP is a mild degreaser found at hardware and home improvement stores.

Dampen a kitchen sponge with the TSP mixture and wipe down the cabinets to remove any grime, dust or loose dirt. Wet a separate kitchen sponge and rinse away the TSP residue. Allow the cabinets to dry completely before continuing.

Mix the glaze and paint according to the depth of color desired. For a lighter shade, combine 3 cups glaze and 1 cup paint. A medium glaze requires mixing equal parts glaze and paint. For a darker hue, mix 3 cups paint and 1 cup glaze. Stir the ingredients until they are well-incorporated with a wooden spoon or stirring stick.

Dampen a rag with the mixture and apply it on the cabinets using overlapping circles. Work in smaller sections to prevent the mixture drying too quickly. Once the section is covered, wipe off the excess with a separate rag.

Continue to apply the glaze mixture to the cabinets until they are completely covered. Allow the glaze to dry for at least 24 hours before hanging the cabinets.
