How to Build Your Own Open Diamond Cube Wine Rack

Buying your own diamond cube wine rack can cost you several hundred dollars and you will only have a few finishes from which to choose. The available choices may not match your existing cabinetry or style. However, building your own diamond cube wine rack lets you customize the rack to the size and style that you prefer. You can also use a wood of finer quality, such as mahogany, or minimize your expense with the use of plywood.

Instructions

  1. With Lattice Interior

    • 1

Measure the area in which you want to place your wine rack. For example, you may want to add the wine rack to your kitchen cabinetry or place it in an alcove.

    • 2

Mark the length and width on the wood of your choice. Cut four boards. If you don't have any particular area you want to install your wine rack, use a 14-inch-by-20-inch measurement to mark your wood.

    • 3

Use a table saw to cut the wood out. Connect two boards together to form the bottom and one side of the rack. Apply a small bead of wood glue and hammer finishing nails to attach the pieces together.

    • 4

Cut lattice to the equal size of your boards. For example, if you used a 14-inch-by-20-inch measurement for your wood, cut the lattice to the same size. Cut two sheets.

    • 5

Attach the one sheet of lattice to your two boards with finishing nails to form the front of your wine rack. Attach the second sheet of lattice to the boards to form the back of the wine rack.

    • 6

Add wood glue and finishing nails to connect a third board to the other two. Attach the last board. You will now have a box with four sides and the lattice will hold your wine bottles in place.

    With Wooden Interior

    • 7

Cut out four pieces of wood to the desired size and at a 90-degree angle. Use a standard 14-inch-by-20-inch size if you prefer.

    • 8

Use a dovetail gauge to mark the ends of the boards. Use a dovetail saw to make the cuts you marked. Use a chisel to break away the wooden parts in between your dove gauge markings. Add one dovetail to each board.

    • 9

Trace the shape of the dovetail on the unfinished edge of each board. Cut out the opposite shapes to form the pin for each board. Interlock one dovetail with the pin of another board. Use wood glue to hold in place and hammer in finishing nails. Continue connecting the boards until you have a box.

    • 10

Interlock one dovetail with the pin of another board. Clamp the two boards together. Use wood glue to hold in place and hammer in finishing nails. Continue connecting the boards until you have a box.

    • 11

Cut three pieces of plywood or other wood to form the vertical slats in the wine rack. Slats should be spaced evenly. One board will go from the bottom left corner to the top right corner. The other two boards will be shorter and spaced at an equal distance from the long center board.

    • 12

Cut three pieces of plywood or other wood to form the slats that will cross over the other pieces of wood. Use the same measurements that you used for the first set of three boards. Mark the locations where the boards will meet and make notches with a router in each board.

    • 13

Sand and stain the interior boards. Add wood veneer to the outside edges of the interior boards if you prefer.

    • 14

Assemble the boards inside the box when they are dry. Fit the notched pieces together so they interlock. Add finishing nails to keep in place.
