Set out two boards, 2-by-4-by-16 inches long, on the working surface, with their largest sides facing upward. Make them parallel to each other and with about 9 inches of space between them. Set two more identical boards on top of them, but rotated 90 degrees so they are perpendicular to the original boards. Overlap the corners of these boards so they form a 16-inch square frame.
Drill three holes through each corner, down through the top boards and into the bottom boards, for a total of 12 holes. Set 2 1/2-inch wood screws in the holes and tighten them completely to secure each of these frames, which are the bench legs.
Repeat this process to create two additional bench legs using eight more boards.
Arrange these bench legs parallel to each other and upright, with their largest sides facing one another. Space them with about 12 inches between them.
Set five boards, 2-by-4-by-42 inches, on top of the bench legs, evenly spaced so there is about 5 inches of overlap past the outside bench legs. Space these boards, which are the seat boards, evenly so there is the same amount of space between each seat board. Make the front and rear seat boards even with the front and rear of the bench legs.
Drill two holes through each seat board and into each bench leg for a total of 30 holes. Set 2 1/2-inch wood screws in each hole and tighten them completely to finish the bench. Repeat as needed for additional benches.
