How to Build Booth Seating for a Kitchen Nook

A simple booth built right onto your kitchen wall creates an opportunity for close dining in a small nook. While benches can be pushed against a wall for a quick seat, a booth makes the space more appealing and adds a sturdy and permanent fixture to even the smallest kitchen. Once you have built booth seating for a kitchen nook, you can paint or stain it as desired to match your kitchen’s décor.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the 4-foot, 2-by-4-inch board on the ground resting on its 2-inch width. Space the five 18-inch boards perpendicularly to the 4-foot board along the length of the board like rungs on a ladder. Insert two screws through the 4-foot board and into the ends of the 18-inch boards to secure.

    • 2

Stand one of the 16-inch plywood boards on its long edge and position it against the other ends of the 18-inch boards. Drive two screws through the plywood and into the ends of the 18-inch boards.

    • 3

Flip the unit over so the ladder-like portion is hanging in the air. Place the unit against your kitchen wall with the 4-foot board against the wall and the plywood in front and touching the floor. Drive six evenly spaced screws through the 4-foot board and into the wall.

    • 4

Slide the 2-by-2-inch board under the unit so it rests on the floor and against the inside surface of the plywood. Drive screws every 12 inches through the board and into the floor. Drive screws every 8 inches through the plywood and into the 2-by-2-inch board to secure.

    • 5

Lay the 1-by-6-inch board over the laddering and push it against the wall, aligning the length with the 4-foot board underneath. Screw through the 1-by-6-inch board and into each of the 18-inch boards underneath.

    • 6

Place the other 16-inch wide sheet of plywood over the remaining ladder portion and push its edge against the 1-by-6-inch board, allowing the seat to overhang the plywood front board by 2 inches. Screw two evenly spaced screws through the 16-inch wide plywood piece and into each 18-inch board underneath.

    • 7

Stand a 2-foot wide plywood piece on a long edge. Set this edge on the seat of the booth and push it back toward the wall until it hits the edge of the 1-by-6-inch board. Insert screws every foot across the length of the plywood into the 1-by-6-inch board as well as 1 inch below the top edge to secure the plywood to the wall.

    • 8

Hold each 2-by-4-foot remaining plywood pieces to the ends of the booth and trace the angle of the back board and the top surface of the seat board onto the plywood. Cut along the traced line with a jigsaw. Replace the plywood along each end of the booth and secure it with screws to the plywood back, seat and kickboard. Sand the booth to smooth the surfaces.
