How to Build a 30 Kitchen Cabinet Box

Building a kitchen cabinet box is a quick project that can add to the storage space in your kitchen. A cabinet box is simply a basic cabinet, often doorless, which can be built in virtually any size to accommodate your needs. A 30-inch cabinet box is sufficient in size to store extra dishes, canned goods and other kitchen necessities. By building your own cabinet box, you can save yourself the cost of custom cabinetry, while adding handy kitchen storage space exactly where you want it.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the 1-inch hardwood into two pieces that are 30-by-30 inches using a circular saw. These boards will serve as the top and bottom panels for your kitchen cabinet box. Cut two more pieces of 1-inch hardwood to 28-by-30 inches for the side panels.

    • 2

Arrange the four boards you just cut into a square shape, standing the boards upright on their narrow edges. Sandwich the two side panels between the ends of the top and bottom panels, positioning the side panels so the 28-inch sides are perpendicular to the top and bottom panels.

    • 3

Secure the cabinet box frame by driving 1 1/2-inch wood screws through the top and bottom panels into the side panels.

    • 4

Use the circular saw to cut another piece of 1-inch hardwood to 30-by-30 inches for the back panel. Lay this panel flat across one open side of the frame you just completed and align the edges. Drive 1 1/2-inch wood screws through the back panel into the frame to attach it.

    • 5

Measure and mark with a pencil the position of any shelves you desire along the side panels. Cut your shelves to a width of 28 inches and a depth of 30 inches.

    • 6

Slide the shelves into place horizontally between the side panels where you made the pencil marks. Use a level to check that the shelves lie flat. Drive 1 1/2-inch wood screws through the side panels into the shelves to secure them.

    • 7

Cut another piece of 1-inch hardwood to the same dimensions as the back panel using the circular saw. This board is the door for your cabinet box. If you want your cabinet box to remain doorless, you may skip this step.

    • 8

Install two metal hinges on the underside of the cabinet door along one edge. Position the hinges about 2 inches from the corners. Align the edge of the cabinet door where you installed the hinges with the corresponding edge of the cabinet frame, so the edge of the door is flush with the edge of the frame.

    • 9

Screw the other side of each metal hinge into the cabinet frame. When finished, the two hinges should be hidden inside the frame and the cabinet door should open and close easily.

    • 10

Paint or stain your completed kitchen cabinet box in a matte, gloss or satin finish paint to match the existing cabinets in your kitchen. Apply a coat of clear varnish or polyurethane to protect the surface of your cabinet.
