How to Attach an Undermount Stainless Sink to a Corian

An undermount sink integrates seamlessly with Corian countertops. Instead of having a lip that anchors itself on the face of the countertop, an undermount sink hides its lip underneath — making more room for more attractive features like the faucet. Many homeowners prefer to have their countertops professionally cut, even if they decide to install the sink themselves. If you decide to try your hand at cutting the hole in your countertop, take your time — you can't make the cut too large.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the Corian countertop on a set of sawhorses, if not already installed. If the countertop is already installed, just proceed to the next step.

    • 2

Position the template for the undermount sink on the Corian countertop and tape it down with painter's tape. Make sure it is centered above the area of the countertop directly over the sink cabinet but leave enough room above the sink for the faucet.

    • 3

Cut the hole for the sink into the countertop with a grinder that has a granite cutting wheel. Proceed to cut the hole along the outline of your template. Be sure to keep the grinder steady and apply medium pressure. Make several passes over the outline to completely cut the counter.

    • 4

Remove the cutting wheel from the grinder, and position the zero tolerance wheel on the grinder. The zero tolerance wheel will remove the cross-hatch marks in the corners of the cutout. Smooth the corners of the hole with the zero tolerance wheel.

    • 5

Smooth the edges of the hole with medium-grade sandpaper. Again smooth the edges with extra-fine sandpaper. Then rub polish over the hole edges with a cloth. Instead of sandpaper, remove the zero-tolerance wheel and position a diamond polish wheel on the grinder. Use the grinder to polish the edges with the polish wheel.

    • 6

Position the undermount sink underneath the countertop. Ask someone else to hold the sink in position while you mark the mounting holes in the sink with a pen. Then remove the sink.

    • 7

Predrill the mounting holes from the underside of the countertop. Make sure to use the drill bit size the manufacturer recommends. The drilled holes must match the size fasteners supplied with the sink.

    • 8

Bead silicone caulk on the flat lip on the top side of the sink.

    • 9

Mount the sink from below the Corian countertop. Secure the sink to the countertop with the supplied fasteners. Often, these fasteners are composed of a wing nut threaded over a screw and both are tightened into an anchor. Tighten each fastener with the appropriate screwdriver.

Wipe up any excess caulk from between the sink and countertop with a cloth.
