How to Make a Toddler Bed From a Crib Mattress

A toddler bed should be low to the floor and easy for a toddler to get in and out of. It may or may not include side rails and a headboard and a base. This toddler bed is simple to make and should fit well in any room. It uses a crib mattress and should be easy for any person to build. This bed is fairly low to the ground to make it easy for a toddler to climb in and out of.

Measuring tape
2 2x4s 53 inches long
2 2x4s 2 inches long
1 1/2 inch screws
Electric drill
53x27-inch piece of plywood
4 2x4s cut into 18-inch pieces
2 12x27-inch pieces of plywood
Electric sander
Paint
Paintbrushes

Instructions

  Measure your crib mattress to ensure that your crib will fit into this plan safely. It is easy to adjust the measurements to fit your crib mattress.

  Create a box with the four longest 2x4s. Using the electric screwdriver attach them at the corners. Use at least two screws per board.

  Screw the big piece of plywood to the bottom of the rectangle frame that you have just created. This will be the base of the bed, and you should use screws every four to six inches to be sure that it is firmly attached to the frame.

  Attach one of the pieces of plywood that is 12x27 inches to one of the 18-inch 2x4s. The top corners should meet and the bottom of the plywood board should be about six inches from the end of the 2x4. Attach another 18-inch 2x4 to the other end of the board. This is the headboard. Repeat these steps to create the footboard for the bed.

  Mount the headboard and footboard to the box that you have built to hold the mattress. Use several screws to attach both the 2x4s and the plywood to the box.

  Sand the bed well with the electric sander, making sure to round out any sharp edges.

  Paint or stain the bed. Allow it to dry completely and then place the crib mattress inside of the box.
