How to Make Your Kids Outdoor Furniture

Kids' outdoor furniture is relatively easy to build. You can find numerous kid-size patio furniture plans online, but it is easy for most hobby woodcrafters and carpenters to adjust the plans of full-size patio furniture to fit children's needs, or to design their own. Completed kids outdoor furniture can be used on your patio, in your yard and even in your home.

Instructions

    • 1

Convert plans for full-size outdoor furniture to fit your children. For example, seats should be no more than 1 foot from the ground, while a table should be no wider than 3 feet.

    • 2

Cut your wood pieces to your new plan measurements using a tape measure, miter saw and carpenter's square to ensure that 90-degree or other angles are cut as necessary.

    • 3

Nail or bolt the pieces together according to your plan designs. Hammer until nail heads are flush with the wood surface to prevent injuries to small children. Also hammer down protruding nail points at an angle, or removed the protruding nails and replace them to prevent cuts.

    • 4

Sand down your kids furniture once it is assembled. This is important for any type of furniture but especially for children's furniture, because of potential splinters or rough areas.

    • 5

Coat the wood with an appropriate water sealant.

    • 6

Allow the water sealant to dry overnight, then paint or stain your kids outdoor furniture. Let the pieces dry for a couple of days in a well-ventilated area before allowing children to use them.
