Locate Manufacturer

• If you don't have the instructions, go to the website of the crib manufacturer. If you are unsure of the manufacturer of your crib, look around the headboard or on the mattress board for a sticker that tells the manufacturer’s name. Search for the manufacturer’s website, and once you are on the website, look for your particular crib model and serial number. Often, manufacturers post assembly instructions for their models on the website; if so, print them out to have them handy while you work.

  If you cannot find the model and serial number, but still have the website, look for a contact number in the “About” section or “Contact Us” section. Contact the manufacturer and ask them to email, mail or fax to you the crib assembly instructions. They can also help you confirm the crib model and serial number for future reference.

Crib Differences

• Never assume that your particular crib can be assembled in the same manner as another similar crib. If they are not the exact same model number, they are almost assuredly not assembled in exactly the same manner. Find the instructions for your specific crib, as no other crib instructions will work and you could even damage the parts to your crib.

  Not only is this a safety issue, but it is also a warranty issue. If you do not assemble your crib properly, you may void the warranty provided by the crib manufacturer. According to the U.S. Consumer Protection Safety Commission: “Cribs that are assembled wrong, have missing, loose or broken hardware or broken slats can result in entrapment or suffocation deaths. Infants can strangle when their head and neck become entrapped in gaps created by missing, loose or broken hardware or broken slats.”

Safety First

• Most online crib instruction sheets will recommend that you assemble the crib with another person, for safety purposes. The crib has bulky pieces that require another person to hold up level before bolts and screws can be attached. If the bolts or screws are not properly installed, pressure can cause the pre-drilled holes to stress and chip. This could cause parts of the crib to become loose or fall off. When you decide to assemble the crib, call on a friend or relative who has experience reading assembly instructions and understands the basic mechanics of furniture construction.

File the Paperwork

• Make it a point to file the crib assembly instructions in a safe, dry location for future reference. Some cribs are three-in-one and convert from a crib to a toddler bed and then to a full-size bed. For each step of the conversion process, you will need to refer to the crib assembly instructions.
