How to Paint a Bassinet For a Mother

There are three steps in painting a bassinet for a mother. The first is to re-finish the wood if necessary. If you're using a bassinet that has been painted or stained before, you'll need to remove the old paint or stain. You will then need to sand the wood to make it smooth. The last step is priming and painting. If you have the opportunity, ask the mother what type of theme she is planning for the baby's room, and base your design accordingly. Using a simple stencil, you can add designs over a base coat that will complement theme choice.

Apply paint stripper to the bassinet with a medium-size brush. Allow stripper to set for time designated on stripper instructions or until you see old paint begin to bubble up. Scrape old paint off with putty knife and steel wool. You may need to apply a second coat of stripper in order to get all of the old paint off. After the paint has been removed, wipe the piece with a rag, and then sand with fine-grade sandpaper until smooth.

If you are using a dark color of paint, you will need a coat of primer. Use a primer that is in the color range for your paint. For example, if you're using red paint, your primer will be pinkish in color. Apply a coat of primer, and allow it to dry. Apply base paint with medium-size brush, and let it dry. Apply a second coat of base paint, and allow it to thoroughly dry..
