How to Make a Youth Bed from a Crib

Youth beds, also known as toddler beds, are the step in between a crib and a regular bed for young children. Youth beds make use of the same size mattress as cribs, meaning that you do not have to worry about purchasing a new mattress in order to move your child out of the crib. Many cribs can be transformed from a crib to a toddler bed. These convertible units are relatively easy to work with and should save you the money of having to run out and purchase new furniture for your toddler.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the crib mattress and set it aside. It should not be inside the unit while you are converting it, as it may fall and cause injury.

    • 2

Remove the screws on the front rail of your crib. The screws may be visible from the outside, or they may be accessible from the interior of the crib frame.

    • 3

Lift the front rail and remove it from the crib. Store it for later use, as many cribs incorporate the front rail into a foot board when the youth bed is converted to a twin or full-size bed.

    • 4

Screw the toddler rail onto the side of the crib where the front rail used to be. Specific placement instructions may vary by model, but they are generally screwed into the crib frame at the head of the bed, next to where the child's pillow will be positioned.

Replace the crib mattress and make the bed with a youth or toddler sheet set.
