Bed Rails & Kids

Once children are old enough to get out of a crib and sleep in a regular bed, they still may need the security and protection of bed rails to keep them from falling out while they sleep or to make sure that they stay in bed to begin with.
  1. Reasons

    • Some children are prone to rolling around in bed and even fall out of bed during the night. The crib had the safety of four high sides to ensure that the baby would not roll out. Child safety rails provide the same type of protection on a smaller scale but in a regular bed.

    Warnings

    • Bed rails need to be securely attached and well designed. A poorly attached or designed bed rail may cause injury to a child if she gets tangled in the railing or falls between the railing and the bed and gets trapped.

    Lengths

    • Safety rails are available in different lengths ranging from full bed length to short partial rails. Partial safety bed rails allow the child to climb around the rail for easier access in and out of the bed. This is good for kids who still need the security of a bed rail but who may be old enough to be potty trained and get out of bed when they need to.

    Security

    • A new bed is exciting for most children, but it can also be a scary experience sleeping in an open bed without the security of the crib rails they are used to. Bed rails help children feel a little more at ease and secure in a big bed.

    Types

    • Solid bed rails may be made of metal, plastic or wood. This type is a formed hard rail that is put on the side of the bed, either attaching to it or under the mattress. It can even stand next to the bed. Another type is a molded foam or stuffed safety bed rail that can either be set on top of the bed or, for a more secure railing, placed under the side of the sheets to create a soft side wall.
