Safe Sleeping Beds for Children

When children outgrow a protective crib, parents need assurance that their kids will sleep safely in a bigger bed. Full-sized beds are usually too high and present danger of falling because there are no protective rails along the sides of the bed. A number of safe sleeping beds for children are available. Features like low elevation and safety rails help children sleep safely without sustaining injury due to falling out of a high bed.
  1. Toddler Beds

    • A toddler bed is a safe option for a child's transition from a crib. Toddler beds don't have rails all the way around like cribs, but they have a safety rail on either side of the child's pillow to prevent him from falling out of bed. The rails are sometimes included with the purchase of a bed, or can be purchased and installed separately. Should the rails fail to contain a wiggling toddler, a toddler bed's low position to the floor will make falls less dangerous than higher beds. Make sure a toddler bed is certified for safety by the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association before deciding on a bed.

    Mid Sleepers

    • A mid sleeper bed, also known as a cabin bed, is a safe sleeping option that allows room for storage under the bed. Mid sleeper beds have rails all the way around to keep kids from falling out. The raised platform requires children to climb a small ladder, so these beds are not the best option for very young children. Many mid sleepers also have a fun play area underneath for children.

    Novelty Beds

    • Fun novelty beds will make children love going to bed, and help parents rest assured that their kids are sleeping safely. Novelty beds can be customized to fit any child's interest, but the most common theme beds are shaped like cars. Other novelty beds include fairies, buses, pirate ships, and heavy equipment. The rails, headboards, and footboards are designed to resemble a car or other item, while a mattress is nestled safely between rails. Many novelty beds are low to the ground and have elevated side rails to protect kids from falling.
