Hang three or four matching baskets from the footboard of a child's bed to provide a place to conveniently store pajamas, socks and stuffed animals. Use round lidless baskets with wide mouths. Be careful not to use baskets made from a material that will snag clothes or little fingers. Plastic or wicker is ideal. Kids can put their favorite bedtime book, a flashlight and a stuffed animal in one, and you can roll pajama bottoms and tops and ball up socks for the others. It's like giving the bed pockets.
The Pottery Barn makes use of chalkboards in the spaces it designs for adults and children alike. A chalkboard wall and buckets of art supplies can keep kids busy for hours. Simply tape off an area of a wall and paint it with chalkboard paint. Most paint manufacturers recommend several coats for the best finish. Hang buckets of colored chalk on large plastic hooks within reach on the wall. Buy low-dust chalk and, instead of erasers, provide children with dampened sponges to further reduce chalk dust.
Add a reading corner to a bedroom by implementing informal storage and a comfortable place to sit. A bookcase that houses the majority of a child's library can be placed in the reading area, while stacks of books on chairs or in a vintage child's wagon can be placed around the room. A comfortable chair, such as a child-sized overstuffed armchair, and good directional lighting are all that's needed to complete the nook.
Displaying a child's own artwork can encourage her to have confidence in her abilities. Create two art galleries in the bedroom: a permanent gallery and a revolving one. Frame the most loved pieces and hang them in a group in a place of prominence. In a larger area, mount several evenly-spaced horizontal strips of corkboard to the wall. Secure art to the corkboard with thumbtacks. You can change the pictures out anytime, or simply have fun rearranging them.
Encourage children to put their clothes away with child-friendly storage. Use see-through storage bins so they can see where things go. Help them even more by labeling bin shelves with pictures of clothing items, like pants and shirts. Make keeping the room clean more fun by putting a large hoop over the laundry basket so kids can shoot hoops as they put their dirty clothes in the right place.
