How to Compare Baby Mattresses

Safety is the first consideration when comparing crib mattresses. Choose the firmest mattress you can find, according to Consumer Reports. Avoid used mattresses which may contain bacteria and mold. New mattresses are more likely to meet all fire and safety regulations.
  1. Safety

    • Mattresses generally are sold in a standard size of 51 5/8 inches by 27 1/4 inches. They should fit snugly, leaving no gaps between the crib and the mattress. Press down on the center and edges of the mattress. It should feel firm and spring back quickly.

    Inner Materials

    • Crib mattresses are made either of polyurethene foam or inner spring coils. Foam mattresses are less expensive and lighter, making changing the sheets simpler. An innerspring mattress offers no advantages over a high quality foam mattress, according to Consumer Reports. Look for a high-density foam mattress--the heavier the better, or an innerspring mattress with 150 coils, 13.5 gauge carbon tempered steel coils and 9.0 gauge steel border rods.

    Mattress Cover

    • A high quality mattress cover has a double-coated laminated cover reinforced with nylon. Forgo flimsy vinyl covers. Vents keep the mattress smelling fresher but may also admit more airborne contaminants, according to Babies Online. The laminated covers on crib mattresses are practical but not very warm and inviting.
