How to Build Fake Lockers

Finding the right solution to fit your child's storage needs is an important part of maintaining an organized household. Without designated storage areas, backpacks, shoes, books and electronics can find their way to the bedroom floor or the bottom of the closet. Creating a wall-unit of lockers for a child's bedroom or recreation area offers a decorative, functional storage system that can even double as a media center. Compartments filled with video gaming equipment, CDs and DVDs leave plenty of space on top of the unit for TVs, computer monitors and game consoles as well.

Instructions

    • 1

Mark the placement of each vent panel and set of hinges needed to completely cover the opening of each cube. Calculate enough space to attach and open each door independently. Drill pilot holes for the door hinges in the side casing of each cubed space accordingly.

    • 2

Mark the desired location for each door handle across from the hinged side on the vent panels. Drill holes in the metal panels for the locker door handles. Attach the handles by placing them over the holes and twisting the screw through the back of each panel into the handle firmly.

    • 3

Mark the location of the hinges to be attached to the vent panels opposite of the handle. Drill pilot holes into the side edges of each panel for the hinge screws. Attach the hinges using the hinge screws.

    • 4

Place each panel door over the opening of each cubed space according to the markings from step 1.Secure each panel door to the cube organizer unit by driving the screws through the hinge holes into the pilot holes.

    • 5

Cut the Velcro into 1/2-inch pieces. Apply one half of the piece to the bottom, non-hinged corner on the backside of each vent panel door. Stick the remaining half of the Velcro piece to the corresponding corner of the cube unit to hold each door shut. Nail two brad nails into the Velcro pieces attached to the unit.
