How to Make a Girl's Vanity Table

It might seem like a shabby little table to you, but little girls love to play dress up in front of vanity tables. A vanity table provides a little girl with her own special place to try on makeup, drape herself in costume jewelry and style her hair. If you don't want to build one and would rather update an old vanity table to make it special, you will need an old vanity, paint and a few other supplies.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit yard sales or thrift shops to find an affordable table that will fit your space.

    • 2

Find an open work area in your home like the garage and spread out a drop cloth.

    • 3

If the vanity table is already painted or lacquered, sand all the surfaces of the table to remove any paint or stain. Clean off the table with a cloth and let dry.

Paint or stain the vanity table. Good colors for little girls are white, pink, red or yellow. If you're painting for your daughter or a specific child, use their favorite color as your choice of paint. Use heart or flower stencils or hand paint a favorite design on part of the vanity. Follow the application and drying instructions on the paint can. Allow the paint to dry.

Use a frilly fabric like lace, tulle or crisp cotton to make the skirting. Skirting is great for conveniently hiding things stored under a vanity like toys or makeup. Measure the length of the bottom of the vanity, cut the fabric to size and then cut the fabric in half. For cotton material, finish raw edges of the fabric by turning the edges to the wrong side and stitching in place. Hem the bottom if using fabrics that are likely to fray. Nail the fabric underneath the vanity, turning the fabric under one inch to hide the top raw edge of the fabric. Make sure that the nail heads are completely flush with the wood to avoid cuts or snags.
