How to Make an Infant Mobile

Mobiles placed above a baby's crib have been a popular decorative choice for years because they serve multiple purposes. While they are excellent as decor, they also keep the interest of the child and give him or her something to focus on. This helps to develop cognitive skills, including reasoning, perception and intuition. Mobiles can be expensive and you may not be able to find one that suits your needs properly. If these are concerns of yours, take the time to build your own mobile.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a baby-safe mobile arm and attach it securely to the headboard of the crib with the clamp that is included with it. Mobile arms can be purchased at home repair stores such as Home Depot or at stores that specialize in baby items. Checking discount stores for old mobiles that you can get parts from is also an option.

Use a hobby knife to make grooves in a piece of plastic tube that measures 12 to15 inches long. The tube should be 1 inch in diameter. Cut a total of four grooves evenly apart and allow 2 inches without a groove at the end of each side of the tube. The grooves should be cut front to back into the tube.

    • 3

Cut four pieces of heavy-duty string or thin nylon cord to a length of 7 inches each.

    • 4

Attach the pieces of string into the grooves on the tube. Tie them onto the tube with secure knots so that they will not slip off and fall into the crib.

    • 5

Tie your choice of four items to the mobile and secure them with a strong knot. Test the knot by pulling on the items. Choose toys, noise-makers, small stuffed animals or other baby-related items. Use high-contrast items in colors such as white, black and red because they are known to help develop sight in babies and they are easiest to see based on the limited sight abilities of babies. Be sure that the items that you use are 1.75-inches or larger in diameter so that they do not pose a choking threat if they come unattached.

Cut another small groove at the center of the tube and secure a 4-inch length of heavy-duty string or thin nylon cord into it. Securely tie it to the tube. Hang the tube on the baby-safe mobile bracket that you previously attached to the headboard of the crib.
