How to Make a Carriage Crib

Infant beds, or cribs, have been a staple furniture item for infants for over 300 years. Cribs are designed to offer safe sleeping quarters for newborn babies through toddlers. They are typically rectangular; 30-inches wide by 54-inches long, and have four high sides with vertical slats (with gaps no greater than 2 3/8 inches). One long side is usually hinged for lowering. For infant well-being, crib structures are regulated by government manufacturing standards. Basic cribs can have structural features added to create a carriage crib. Ready-made carriage cribs are available, but the cost runs as high as $20,000! Creating a simplified version of a fantasy carriage crib is not only possible, but affordable.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a template out of cardboard or poster board for the carriage wheels. Draw a 24-inch diameter outer circle, and a 22-inch diameter inner circle; this will serve as the wheel rim. Using a straight edge, draw eight evenly spaced 1-inch thick spokes. Draw a 6-inch circular center; this will serve as the hub.

    • 2

Cut out the spaces between the spokes and around the perimeter with a utility knife.

    • 3

Draw around the template, including spokes, on 1-inch thick plywood. Do this for all four wheels.

    • 4

Cut out the four wheels along drawing lines using a jig saw. Use a 1/2-inch drill bit to create starter holes for the jig saw for cutting out spaces between the spokes on each wheel.

    • 5

Router the outer edges of the wheels, on both sides, with a router and a round over router bit. Sand all cuts.

    • 6

Center the hub (the 6-inch center circle) of each carriage wheel on a crib leg. Attach the carriage wheels to each leg of the crib, using three 2-inch screws. Crib legs may be kept intact or cut just below the screws.

    • 7

Paint the crib and carriage wheels as desired.
