How to Make Twin Bunkie Boards

Sleepovers and vacations are great fun until you sleep in a bed with a bar in your back or even worse, a sinkhole in the middle. Uncomfortable beds will keep you up at night and tired the following day. Don't run the risk of your guests and loved ones sleeping on a bed that keeps them from getting a restful night sleep. Bunkie boards keep a mattress supported, save you from having to buy a new mattress, and most importantly, save you from a backache or unhappy visitors.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay a 4-by-8-by-3/4-inch piece of plywood on a flat, raised surface. Apply a thick bead of wood glue on one side of the plywood, about 1 1/2 inches from the edge of the wood. Lay the 4-by-8-by-1/2-inch piece of plywood on top of the first sheet of plywood and press together, making sure to align all of the edges.

    • 2

Clamp the two pieces of plywood together using adjustable C-clamps. Place four clamps on the long sides and two clamps on the short sides. Allow the glue to cure for at least 24 hours, then remove the clamps.

    • 3

Measure and mark a width of 38 inches on the plywood sheet. Then measure and mark a length of 75 inches.

    • 4

Set up a table saw or cutting surface for a circular saw. Plug in the saw and cut along the measurements marked on the plywood sheet. Cut all the way through the end of each measurement to avoid splintering at the corners.

    • 5

Use a rough grit sandpaper to round the corners of the plywood board. The corners should be rounded just enough to keep a fabric covering from ripping at the corners.

    • 6

Lay a piece of cotton twill or canvas on a flat surface, such as a table or floor, with the wrong side of the fabric facing up. Lay the plywood board on top of the fabric and wrap the fabric around the edges of the board. Hold the fabric tightly and staple the fabric into place along the back of the board. Cut off any excess fabric off the back of the board after stapling. Place the bunkie board on the twin bed and lay your mattress on top for total support.
