How to Convert a Dropside Crib to a Toddler Bed

Determine that your dropside crib has not been recalled. In 2010, the Consumer Product Safety Commission banned the manufacture, sale and resale of dropside cribs. However, not all dropside cribs have been recalled. Contact the CPSC to determine if your crib is on the recall list.

Remove the mattress from the crib.

Adjust the metal frame under the mattress so that it is at the lowest level. Different models vary on specifics adjustments, but you will likely use a wrench to remove the screws connecting the metal frame underneath the mattress.

Remove the side of the crib that has the dropside. Unscrew the four short bolts that hold the dropside to the rest of the crib with your screwdriver. Avoid using power tools with the crib, as this could damage the wood. If your model has a decorative center under the dropside panel, remove that as well by unscrewing its screws. Check your manufacturer's instructions to determine where your particular crib's dropside screws are.

Determine if you need a toddler bed conversion rail kit. Many dropside convertible cribs simply leave the space where the dropside was empty to allow the child to get in and out easily. This style also resembles an adult bed. If you are nervous about the child rolling out, you can purchase a bed rail or a specially designed convertible crib rail that will screw to the bed’s side. Installing a rail will give it the look of a toddler bed without the price of an entirely new bed.
