How to Build Fake Lockers for Kids

Lockers are a great way to store your children's personal belongings and toys without taking up large amounts of floor space. Commercial lockers are often costly and difficult to buy in small quantities without large shipping charges. Using a precut and drilled bookcase available in the home section of many large stores and adding in extras such as doors and hooks make this project easier and customizable for use in nearly any room of the house. Using a tall bookcase that is around 12 inches in width will make an authentic looking locker.

  • Cabinet hinges

Instructions

    • 1

Assemble the bookshelf as instructed by the directions. Install the shelves in the places where shelves are desired in the locker.

    • 2

Measure the dimensions of the outside front of the bookcase. Cut a door from plywood to match the outer dimensions of the bookcase.

    • 3

Sand and paint the plywood door to match the color of the bookcase.

    • 4

Mark where the hinges will be attached on the door. If the door is larger than 30 inches, use three evenly spaced hinges. If the door is smaller than 30 inches, use two evenly spaced hinges. Drill pilot holes and screw in the screws to secure the hinges on the door.

    • 5

Repeat Step 4 on the bookcase, attaching the door to the outside of the bookshelf.

    • 6

Check the fit of the door, making changes to the hinges, if necessary.

    • 7

Attach a handle to the door, if desired.

    • 8

Attach hooks to the walls and door to hang clothes, towels or other objects, if desired.

    • 9

Add other embellishments such as nameplates or decorations to match the room decor, if desired.
