Painting Baby Beds

Once you verify the baby bed you own meets all necessary safety standards, you can paint it to create a custom piece in your infant's nursery. Unlike a bed for older children and adults, infant cribs cannot be painted with just any paint. As infants grow, they place anything within reach into their mouths -- including the sides of their crib. Painting a crib with a paint not recommended for use in a nursery can have negative health side effects on your child.

Instructions

    • 1

Take the crib apart completely. While you can paint the crib while it's still together, you risk missing spots or leaving visible paint drips.

    • 2

Sand the crib with a piece of fine-grit sandpaper. Ensure you get every crevice to help the paint adhere to the surface.

    • 3

Apply a coat of paint evenly to the crib. Allow the paint to dry according to manufacturer's directions.

    • 4

Apply a second coat of paint if necessary before adding decorative touches. Allow the second coat or decorative touches to dry completely.

    • 5

Paint on a coat of baby-safe clear coat over the paint. The clear coat helps protect the paint job.

    • 6

Allow the clear coat to dry according to directions on the bottle. Put the crib back together, and place it in the nursery.
