How to Make Your Own Toy Shed

Children's toys can be difficult to store in an attractive manner, as they have a tendency to become strewn about and often are difficult to keep within their storage containers, no matter how functional and attractive they may be. One way to encourage children to keep their toys neatly stored is to give them a fun place to store them. A toy shed made of wood is a classic solution to this problem and can easily be built by most people with some wood and a saw. The exterior can be painted with as much detail as desired.

Instructions

    • 1

Set out one of the side boards on the working surface. Make a mark directly in the center of the top edge. Measure down 12 1/2 inches from the top edge on each of the sides of the board and mark the spot. Connect each of the two new markings with the original center marking by way of a straight line. Cut along the two lines with the saw so that the board resembles a rectangle with a triangle resting on top of it. Repeat for the other side board.

    • 2

Set the two freshly cut side boards on top of the base board along the two edges so that the outside edge of each side board is flush with the outer edge of the base board. Position the front and back boards on the front and back of the toy shed with the help of an assistant. Arrange the front and back boards so they are touching the working surface but pushed up tightly against the other boards. Predrill four holes through both the front and rear boards into each adjoining board, so that you make 24 holes. Attach the boards with wood screws.

    • 3

Flip the toy shed upside down, and predrill four evenly spaced holes through the base of the shed into both side boards. Attach the base to the side boards with the wood screws.

    • 4

Position the two roof boards on top of the shed. Remove one board and hold the other board in place firmly. Predrill two holes through the roof board and into each adjoining board so there are six holes. Attach the roof board to the adjoining board with wood screws.

    • 5

Position two hinges on the apex of the house, with the hinges pointing up and the screw holes against the end of the roof board. Mark the screw holes and predrill them. Attach the hinges with wood screws. Position the other roof board against the hinges and mark the location of the screw holes. Predrill the screw holes and attach the other roof board to the hinges with wood screws. Test the opening function of the roof board, and make any adjustments necessary.
