How to Make a Wall Storage Unit for a Kid's Room

Storage is a natural and necessary part of any room occupied by children, as they tend to posses both incredible amounts of small, beloved objects and clothes they rapidly outgrow. Integrating plenty of storage into their bedrooms or playrooms is an excellent way to set the space up for success and position it to be cleaner and as functional as possible. A functional and attractive way to do this is to designate one entire wall as a storage area, and build a versatile and customizable shelving/storage system which can be changed to fit the needs of the children as they mature.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the studs on the two side walls which border the wall on which the storage unit will be installed. Mark the locations of the studs within the first foot or two on each side wall, as well as the locations of studs in the very center of the intended storage wall.

    • 2

Measure 6 inches up from the bottom of the two side walls and the center of the rear wall and mark the locations. Position one of the 12-inch 2-by-4 support boards on each side wall and line it up with the 6-inch position so that one end of the board is flush with the back wall. Predrill two holes through the support board and into each stud, making sure that the drill bit hits the stud wood. Attach the support boards to the wall using the 3-inch wood screws.

    • 3

Place the shelf board on top of the supports and push it flush against the rear wall. Predrill three holes down through the shelf board and into all three wall supports so there are nine holes in total. Attach the shelf board to the supports using the 3-inch wood screws.

    • 4

Support this first shelf board further if the board is sagging or if the room is wider than 8 feet by cutting short 6-inch pieces of 2-by-4 and positioning them under the center of the shelf to serve as legs. Predrill two holes through the shelf and into each board and attach them with the 3-inch wood screws.

Install additional shelving above this first shelf in the same manner and at whatever intervals are desired for maximum storage. Cut a board of the same dimensions as the shelf wood to fit into the vertical space between the shelves and position it between the shelves vertically to provide additional support and a place for storage baskets or segmented organization. Predrill two holes through the shelf boards above and below the vertical divider and into the vertical board. Attach the vertical board to the shelf boards using the 1 1/2-inch wood screws.
