How to Build a Toddler Chair

A set of wooden toddler chairs is a great way for your children to transition from the high chair to getting used to adult-style seating. Toddler chairs are ideal for playing games around tables, doing art and craft projects and having parties. Build your own chairs for far less than you would pay in a store.

Instructions

    • 1

Arrange four of the one-foot boards in a square on the working surface with their long, thin faces flush to the surface. Position the boards so that one end of each board butts up against the side of another and all four boards form a perfect square. Pre-drill two holes through the side of each board and into the end of the adjoining board using a drill bit slightly smaller in diameter than the diameter of the wood screws so there are eight holes in total. Attach the boards with wood screws to make the seat.

    • 2

Place the four 13-1/2-inch boards on top of the assembled seat and parallel to each other with their largest surfaces flush with the seat boards. Press the boards together firmly and arrange them so none of these top boards stick out unevenly in relation to the bottom boards. Pre-drill two holes down through each top board into the bottom board below, making eight holes in all. Attach the boards with wood screws.

    • 3

Flip the assembled seat upside down and position the remaining two 12-inch leg boards parallel to each other on opposite sides of the seat, with their widest face flush to the side of the seat and one end flush to the working surface. Position the leg boards at the front of each side, so that the long, thin side of each leg board is even with the front of the chair seat.

    • 4

Pre-drill four evenly-spaced holes through the chair seat boards and into the legs, being careful not to break through the outside surface. Attach the legs to the seat board with wood screws.

    • 5

Flip the chair back upright and position the two-foot rear leg boards parallel to the front leg boards but on the back of each side of the chair seat. Hold the seat at the desired angle in relation to the rear leg boards and pre-drill four holes through the leg boards and into the seat board. Attach the leg boards to the seat board with wood screws.

    • 6

Set the two 16-inch seat back boards against the front surfaces of the rear leg boards and arrange them about two inches apart near the top of the leg boards. Pre-drill two holes through each seat back board and into the rear legs. Attach the seat back boards to the legs with wood screws.
