How to Get Rid of Lacquer Smells on a New Crib

A lacquer smell on your baby's new crib can be both unpleasant and toxic. You can take measures to minimize the odor before it reaches your nursery. Additional steps after it dries may also help reduce a lacquer aroma. Ensure that the lacquer and any cleaning products you use are completely dry before putting baby back into his bed.

Instructions

Place the crib in a well-ventilated area. Fresh varnish will completely dry if outside or in an open garage with windows. This may take several days, especially if there are several coats of varnish on the crib.

    • 2

Place a few small bowls of cider vinegar in the nursery near the crib if you continue to notice a lacquer smell. Cider vinegar has a pleasant, sweet aroma, different from the bitter essence of white vinegar, that will leave the room with a better scent.

    • 3

Prepare a 50:50 mixture of water and cider vinegar in a medium-sized bowl or tub. Dip a rag in the solution and wipe down all lacquer surfaces of the crib and allow to dry thoroughly. Repeat as necessary until the odor is gone. You may have to repeat this step over a period of a few days.

Follow manufacturer’s instructions or suggestions if you need additional help. Often the maker of the crib or the manufacturer of the lacquer you use provides cleaning instructions. Read the instructions or call the phone number on the package for additional information.
