How to Make a Flip Top LEGO Table

A Lego flip table offers play space for some activities with the option to flip the table top over to reveal a Lego base plate and storage space for loose Lego pieces. While premade Lego flip tables are available through big box toy stores, you can make your own Lego table at home for considerably less. Once your table is created you can set it in any room of the house for decorative uses and function or keep it in a play area for children.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay two 1-by-6-inch-by-2-foot boards side by side spaced 22 inches apart on their 1-inch width. Align two identical boards perpendicular to the first two to form a square and cap the ends of the first boards. Insert two screws into each corner to secure the square.

    • 2

Lay a 1-by-3-inch-by-2-foot board flat on the ground on its 3-inch width. Stand a second 1-by-3 on edge and align it against the first board to form a 90 degree angle down the length of the boards. Insert a screw every 6 inches to secure. Repeat this step three more times.

    • 3

Stand one of the 90 degree angle units upright and position it flush against one of the outer corners of the square frame to make a table leg extending into the air. Screw two evenly spaced screws through each side of the leg and into the frame. Repeat this with the three other legs to attach them to the frame.

    • 4

Set a sheet of 3/4-inch plywood, 22-by-24 inches, into the frame so it rests on the floor. Place a 1-by-1-by-18-inch board on the plywood and center it running along the inside of one of the frame’s walls. Insert a screw through the 1-by-1 and into the frame at each end of the board. Repeat this step with the three more 1-by-1-inch boards on the other sides of the frame.

    • 5

Drop a sheet of 3/4-inch plywood, 24-by-26 inches, between the angles of the legs and bring it flush against the frame to form the table’s bottom. Screw through the plywood and into the frame every 6 inches to secure.

    • 6

Flip the table upright. The 22-by-24-inch plywood, which is still unattached, will still be on the ground. Lift the plywood and cut across two corners on a diagonal with a jigsaw. Sand over the plywood and table. Inset the plywood into the table, resting on the 1-by-1-inch supports.

    • 7

Center the Lego building plate on the plywood. Apply wood glue between the plywood and plate, press the plate downward and allow it to dry four to six hours.
