How to Move Large Furniture

When you are getting ready to move, start by making a plan. Make a detailed list of what furniture has to be moved. Set aside furniture that will be trashed or donated to charity. Be detailed about what furniture is to go in which rooms when you get where you are going.

Have an assigned person to direct the moving on the big day. The day will go smoothly if you have someone with management skills to direct what goes when and where.

Check the local radio stations and online for programs that will allow you to sell or give away furniture that you won't need any longer.

Get a firm commitment from the people that are going to help move the furniture. Give them a call the night before to double check that they will be helping. The helpers are going to need food and drinks,. Having some ladies around to clean up the mess and make the food is an excellent idea.

Many of us do labor exchanges with our friends, neighbors and family members. Be "extra" kind to the guy that has the pickup truck. It also may be the case that you have hired a professional mover and you can take care of the minor items yourself.

The large pieces of furniture can be either the first or the last thing to move. One thing about it, if the large couch or refrigerator is inside the house, there is a way to get it back outside.

Men seem to have a natural proclivity to knowing how to use a hand truck. Tip the refrigerator a bit to slide the lip of the hand truck underneath. Then secure the straps tightly around the refrigerator to hold it securely on the hand truck. Moving up and down stairs takes one guy in front to be the guide. And another guy behind the hand truck to do the pushing.

This job is completed when the doors to the refrigerator and the doors to the house are put back on and they are returned to good working order.

Moving a large couch takes more of the brawn and beef. Remove the sofa cushions. Tip the couch onto its back to remove the legs. Then three or four guys have to lift that sucker and get it out of the doorway and onto the truck. A hand truck just won't work with a couch. It takes "beef" and sweat to get a couch moved.

When moving fine furniture like a large hutch, dining room table, or bedroom furniture it is essential that you protect the finish with blankets or other padding. A scratch in the tabletop of a friend will be remembered for a lifetime. Be extra careful when you are helping to move other people's furniture. If you damage your own furniture, you have to live with it.
