What Makes a Good Computer Chair?

For those who work at a computer for extended periods, selecting the correct chair is crucial to not only their health, but also to their mood. Sitting in an uncomfortable and unmanageable chair all day can make a person crabby, and it is also bad for the posture.
  1. Comfort

    • The most important feature in a good computer chair is comfort. This is why it is important to try out chairs in person versus buying online.

    Control

    • Control is an important feature to consider when purchasing a computer chair. Being able to adjust the height, arms and even the lumbar support will make the chair more comfortable.

    Size

    • While many people believe that having a large computer chair is beneficial, this is simply not true. A chair that is too small or large for the person sitting in it can be uncomfortable and hard to control.

    Style

    • Style is another important factor in choosing a computer chair. A swivel style chair is a good choice because it adds mobility. Choosing a chair made from leather over cotton is also a plus because it is easier to clean, and with proper care will last longer than other materials.

    Price

    • Price always needs to be considered. A chair may be cheap, but it may not last long and is likely to be uncomfortable; an expensive chair may be bulky and hard to use. Look for a chair that has comfort, style and options within a median price range (see Resources).

    Padding

    • Memory foam and mesh chairs are both comfortable padding options. Be wary of chairs that have simple, thin foam pads. While they may be cheaper, they also wear down quickly and become uncomfortable.
