For many computer users, a netbook or laptop computer means freedom from the confines of a desk. For others, it can mean that there is no need for a desk at all. A workspace can be arranged on a tabletop anywhere in the home or office, which can make multitasking far easier. Working outdoors or at a place where wireless Internet service is available, such as many coffee shops and restaurants, can allow you to take your work with you and give variety to your surroundings. Lap desks, which combine a soft surface for resting against your body with a hard, flat surface for your computer, can allow you to use your laptop while seated where there is no table available or even in bed.
Even in the case of a laptop, it may be preferable to have your computer as part of a fixed setup. This, however, does not necessarily mean the need for a desk. Flat-panel monitors make it easy to position computers on other pieces of furniture, such as an entertainment center, bookshelf or filing cabinet. Consider how often--and for how long--you generally use your computer. A home computer that is only used for short times can be set up on the corner of a counter where you can stand while using it. Likewise, pulling up a chair to an entertainment center with a shelf for devices like a keyboard and mouse can turn it from a piece of storage furniture into a useful desk alternative. An added advantage of integrating a computer into an entertainment center is the ability to connect it to other media devices, such as digital video recorders and television sets.
