How to Convert a Desk Drawer Computer Keyboard Tray

Computer keyboard trays are a nice way to store your keyboard while also clearing up desk space. If you already have a center desk drawer on your desk that is going unused, you easily convert it to a keyboard tray with a little effort and for less than a store bought model.

Things You'll Need

  • Saw
  • Power drill
  • 3/4-inch spade drill bit
  • 1-inch cable grommet
  • Mallet
  • 2 cabinet roller catches
  • 2 small hinges
  • Screwdriver

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the desk drawer from the rails.

    • 2

Cut off the front of the drawer.

    • 3

Drill a hole through the back of the drawer. This is where you will run the keyboard wire. The hole should be large enough for the cable grommet to fit snugly into the hole.

    • 4

Install the cable grommet. Push the grommet housing into the hole and the plastic ridges should hold the grommet in place. Place the grommet cap on the top of the grommet.

    • 5

Add hinges to the drawer front. If you want to keep the drawer front to hide the keyboard when not in use, screw in two small cabinet latches on the inside bottom of the drawer and connect them to the inside front of the drawer.

    • 6

Mark the cabinet catches. Mark where you will put the roller end of the cabinet catches. Mark a spot on the inside of the drawer on both the right and left sides towards the top of the drawer, opposite the hinge.

    • 7

Install the cabinet catches. Using the supplied screws, screw the roller into the inside of the drawer where you made your marks.

    • 8

Close the cabinet front and mark where the roller end touches the inside of the cabinet.

    • 9

Install the metal catch end of the cabinet catch into the inside of the drawer front, where you made your marks. Using the supplied screws, screw the metal end of the catch so that it lines up with the roller end when the drawer is closed. Now, when you close the drawer front, the catches should keep the front of the drawer closed.

    • 10

Place your keyboard inside the drawer and run the cable through the cable grommet.

    • 11

Place the drawer back on the rails and slide into the desk. To use the keyboard, pull down the drawer front, and slide the drawer out.
