DIY File Cabinet & Desk

Why spend the money for an expensive factory-built desk and file cabinet for a home office when you could save considerable money by creating the exact solution that meets your unique needs? Creating a file cabinet and desk are straightforward tasks that most people can finish, and with a minimum of time and money.
  1. File Cabinets

    • Construct a simple file cabinet by starting with a frame including a top, bottom, and two sides. A back piece is optional. Then build the shelves for the files by connecting the front piece (with a handle) to a bottom piece. Use rail sets, available for purchase at most hardware stores, so the drawer will roll in and out of the cabinet. Then secure a wire hanging-folder rack to the drawer with a heavy tack. This will cost the price of the planking, handles, rails, and wire rack, and can be built in as little as 30 minutes.

    Desks

    • Build a simple desk with a solid plank of wood and four pre-cut spindles. Spindles used for banisters are the right size for a desk; simply paint them and secure them to the four corners of the desk with brackets. This solution gives a desk that has elegant carved legs at very little cost and time investment. Varnish the top to protect it from scratches and spills.

    Modular Design

    • Modular furniture pieces improve versatility while reducing costs. Using simple painted milk crates as desk supports is an easy way to build a desk and file-storage solution. Use the crates as the "legs" to the desk, with the open end facing outward. Use accordion files or a wire rack for hanging files to organize and store files. Put a solid, painted board on top of the crates to serve as the desk top, and secure it to the crates with screws. For stability, secure the crates to each other with wire or multiple-locking zip ties.
