Instructions

  1. Make the Bookcases

    • 1

Place two 12- by 60-inch uprights 36 inches apart for each of your two bookcases. Put the uprights on a flat surface running vertically by height. Measure and mark every 10 inches up the height of each section.

    • 2

Set seven 12- by 36-inch sections for each bookcase on the flat surface so they are standing between the uprights to make shelves 36 inches wide and 12 inches deep with the uprights positioned so that their 1/2- by 60-inch edges face up. Place one 12- by 36-inch section along the interior edge at the bottom of each board. Place an additional 12- by 36-inch board at each mark on the 12-by 60-inch boards, for a total of seven 12- by 36-inch shelves per stand.

    • 3

Attach the seven shelves to the two uprights of each bookcase using one screw every 3 inches on the side edges of each 12- by 36-inch shelf.

    • 4

Lay the bookcases face-down on a flat surface. Place a 37- by 60-inch back section of plywood on top of each bookcase, lining up the edges of the back with the edges of the bookcases.

    • 5

Attach the back sections to the bookcases by applying one screw every 6 inches along the outer perimeter, as well as every 6 inches along the back edge of each shelf.

    Build the Desk

    • 6

Place the 36-inch by 36-inch piece of 1/2-inch plywood on a flat surface. Select one corner, and measure out and make a mark on the edge of the plywood 24 inches from the corner in each direction.

    • 7

Draw a line to connect the 24-inch marks. Cut along this line with a hand saw to eliminate the corner. Keep the larger of the two pieces after you cut, and discard the smaller triangle.

    • 8

Select the corner along the opposite side, directly behind the cut edge. Measure out 6 inches from the corner along each edge. Draw a line connecting the two 6-inch marks, and cut the corner off using a hand saw. Removing this 6-inch section in the rear of the desk allows cables to pass through without disturbing your work area.

    • 9

Place the cut 36- by 36-inch section on a flat surface so the longer cut edge is facing toward you. This section will be the corner desk top. Make legs by placing lining the 12-inch side of one 12- by 30-inch section of 1/2-inch plywood up with the remaining 12 inches of each edge where you measured and removed 24 inches. Attach the legs by screwing down from the desktop directly into the legs. Place a screw every 3 inches along the top for each leg.

    • 10

Place the 8 1/2- by 30-inch plywood section along the 6-inch cut edge. Center and line it up with the edge, and screw it into place with three evenly spaced screws.

    Attach Desk to Bookcases

    • 11

Set the three-legged desk in the desired corner space with the 6-inch cut edge in the corner. Place one bookshelf along each adjoining wall, pressing the edge tight to the legs of the desk.

    • 12

Attach the bookcases to the desk by placing screws every 6 inches along the perimeter of each desk leg. For a clean appearance, get under the desk and screw into the bookcases from the inner side of the legs.

    • 13

Paint the desk and bookcases to your desired appearance.
