How to Build a Table Easel

Easels are used as a support while you work on a painting or other craft. They are also handy if you want to display a piece of art or a note. Most easels are floor easels that require an artist to stand up to work. Some artists, particularly children, prefer to paint and do work on a tabletop. Luckily, you can make a tabletop easel using a few household items.

Things You'll Need

  • Large cardboard box
  • Duct tape
  • Box cutter
  • Felt marker

Instructions

    • 1

Find a box made out of the strongest cardboard possible. Pick a clean box designed to carry heavy items, such as one made for bottles. Many stores will be happy to give you an empty box that is no longer in use.

    • 2

Seal the box with duct tape along all the seams and openings so it is shut tight.

    • 3

Draw a diagonal line across the short end of the box from one corner to the other. Use a ruler and a felt marker so that the line is straight and accurate. Repeat on the other side of the box, making sure that the new line matches the line on the other side.

Cut across each line using a box cutter. Continue cutting along the long edges of the box until the entire box is in two halves. Each half will have a triangular shape. If you are making one easel, discard one of the halves. If you are making two easels, continue working with both halves.

Set the box on a table or flat surface with the open half facing down. Using the box cutter, cut two 1-inch long slits in one of the slopes of the box, just below the top seam. Each slit should be 1/3 of the way from the box's top seam, or you can adjust the distance to fit the size of the paper you will use. Insert a clothespin into each slit; these will hold your paper.
