How to Fix a Steelcase Chair's Pneumatics

Most Steelcase office chairs use a pneumatic pump to adjust the chair's height. These pneumatics can lose their ability to keep the chair at a specific height. Most people get rid of their chairs and buy new ones when the chair loses its ability to hold a height, but it is simple to fix the pneumatic pump without having to replace it. Doing these simple fixes can save you the expense of a new chair.

Instructions

    • 1

      Place the chair upside down on the ground.

      Remove the seat, backrest and arms by taking out the screws connecting them to the pneumatic cylinder bracket located at the base of the seat.

      Remove the bolt holding the pneumatic cylinder bracket to the pneumatic cylinder.

      Tape a small piece of plastic to the end of the height adjustment lever using duct tape. This end of the height adjustment lever will be next to the height adjustment screw in the pneumatic cylinder bracket.

      Remove the height adjustment screw from the pneumatic cylinder bracket using a socket wrench.

      Put several layers of rubber cement onto the height adjustment screw. Each layer of glue must dry completely prior to applying another layer.

      Thread the height adjustment screw back into the pneumatic cylinder bracket using a socket wrench.

      Reattach the pneumatic cylinder bracket to the pneumatic cylinder.

      Reattach the seat, backrest and arms.

      Test the height adjustment ability on the Steelcase chair.
