How to Repaint a Metal Filing Cabinet

Repainting a metal filing cabinet is easier than you may think. It doesn't matter if you are starting with a new filing cabinet or if you are refinishing one that is 50 years old; the process is simple and straightforward. If your cabinet is marred by rust and a chipped finish or if the color is not in line with your existing decor, a little time and a fresh coat of paint will transform your filing cabinet into a more functional piece of office furniture.

Instructions

    • 1

Spread drop cloth to protect the floor underneath the cabinet.

Assess the cabinet's condition, noting any rust spots.

    • 2

Sand rusted spots, if necessary. Sand in the same direction until you expose the bare metal. Wipe the surface clean with a damp cloth and allow it to dry.

    • 3

Protect chromed hardware with masking tape or petroleum jelly to prevent paint smears.

    • 4

Use a neutral primer to cover the cabinet evenly.

    • 5

If using enamel paint, use a roller to paint the sides and top of the cabinet, and use a brush to paint the doors and spaces around the handles. If using spray paint, start at the top and work your way down, using short spurts to ensure even distribution and prevent runs.

    • 6

Apply a second coat, if necessary.

    • 7

If using stencils, apply the paint with a sponge brush or spray paint.

    • 8

Spray the cabinet with a paint sealer, if desired.

    • 9

Remove the masking tape before the paint dries fully, and clean up any unwanted smudges.
