How to Assemble a Wooden File Cabinet

Don't be alarmed when shopping for a wooden file cabinet that the one you choose might require some assembly. Office furniture manufacturers try to produce their products in ways that make them easy to assemble. Most products will require common household tools such as a screwdriver or hammer for assembly. Whether the exterior is finished in dark cherry or with a white antique patina, assembling a cabinet can give a do-it-yourself homeowner the satisfaction of a job well done.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay all the pieces of the cabinet out and separate them by parts. For example, put the sides or drawer parts together in the same place.

    • 2

Assemble the sides to the front and back, followed by the top and bottom. Some assemblies will have slots that just slip into place. Others have pins that insert into a predrilled hole and pull together by rotating a round clip using a Phillips screwdriver.

    • 3

Secure the drawer slides to the left and right of a drawer box. Some slides will require screws, while others have pins that tap into place. If they tap into place, secure the drawer slides to the sides before assembling the drawer box.

    • 4

Install the drawer slide hardware inside the file cabinet. Place the file drawers in the cabinet and install the knobs on the drawer fronts.

    • 5

Open the drawers slowly to check the fit. Adjust them according to the type of drawer slides employed by the product.
