Lock the drawers of the Steelcase filing cabinet. If there isn't a lock, tape the drawers shut with duct tape. This will ensure that the drawers don't slide out during the removal process.
Tell someone to stand in front of the filing cabinet to ensure that it doesn't tip forward when moving it away from the wall.
Position one person on each of the two sides of the filing cabinet. Grab the backside edges of the cabinet, and slide it away from the wall. Slide it until it is about six feet from the wall.
Position the hand truck directly behind the filing cabinet with the lifting platform facing the backside of the cabinet. Have the person in front grab the top of the filing cabinet while the two people on the sides grab the back top corners of the cabinet. Pull these corners toward the front until the back bottom edge of the cabinet lifts up off the floor about one inch. Slide the hand truck underneath the cabinet.
Wrap the securement straps around the front and sides of the cabinet. Fasten the straps back to the backside of the hand truck. Follow the securement instructions on the label of your particular hand truck to properly secure the strap.
Pull back on the handle of the hand truck to lift the cabinet off the floor. Ask the other helpers to push back on the filing cabinet until it's off the floor and its weight is balanced on the wheels of the hand truck. Move the filing cabinet to wherever you want it. Ask the helpers to stay on each side of the cabinet to help lift the dolly if you need lifting assistance.
