How to Remove a Metal File Drawer

Metal filing cabinets offer one storage solution for home office paperwork and confidential personal items. The cabinets often consist of multiple metal drawers that are positioned horizontally on top of each other. The drawers are secured into a metal frame to prevent them from falling out if you pull them open too far. This can make it difficult to remove the metal drawers from the cabinet.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the metal file drawer as much as possible and remove all of the paperwork and personal items from inside of it. Although it may be tempting to leave the items inside, they can be very heavy, making it difficult to remove the drawer from the frame.

    • 2

Grasp either side of the drawer with your hands and ensure that it is still pulled out as far as possible. Lift the drawer up by 1/4 to 1/2 inch and pull outward to see if it releases from the cabinet.

    • 3

Kneel down and look at the left side of the drawer to locate a small tab located in the center of the track. Then look at the right side of the drawer and locate the corresponding tab on that side.

    • 4

Push in on both the left and right tabs simultaneously while pulling outward on the drawer to remove it from the cabinet.
