How to Adjust a 453 Steelcase

Steelcase Incorporated is a company known for manufacturing high-quality office furniture. The Criterion 453 is one of the company's high-performance work chairs and comes as a high-back, mid-back or high-back plus model, with or without arms. It is designed for users who need to sit for longer periods of time. The Criterion 453 features a wide range of adjustment options to meet the needs of most office employees.

Instructions

    • 1

Adjust the seat height by locating the handle under the seat and holding it up; this will lower the seat when you sit and raise the seat when you stand. This is a pneumatic adjustment that spans five inches, with a total height range of 16-inches to 21-inches.

    • 2

Change the seat angle by pulling up on the other handle that's located under the seat, on the opposite side. Shift your weight while holding the handle until the seat angle is comfortable; release the handle to lock the angle in place.

    • 3

Pull the handle from step two up to adjust the seat depth; slide the seat forward or back to accommodate your leg length. Release the handle to lock the seat depth in place.

    • 4

Turn the knob on the underside of the seat to adjust the back tension. Turning it clockwise will increase the tension; a counter-clockwise turn will decrease the tension.

    • 5

Adjust the back recline of the chair by locating the variable back stop switch located on the side of the seat. Hold this switch forward while you're leaning back and release it when the seat back is at a comfortable angle.

    • 6

Locate the handle under the chair back and pull it forward to adjust the back height. While the handle is engaged, move the chair back up or down; release the handle to lock the position of the chair back. There is a two-inch range for adjusting the back height.

Change the arm height or width by squeezing in the triggers that are located on the outside of the arms. While the triggers are depressed, move the arms up, down, in or out; release the triggers when the arms are at a comfortable height and width. The arms are adjustable within a four-inch height and width range.
