Ways to Make Whiteboards

Whiteboards have all but replaced chalkboards for teaching, presentation, and office and home organization such as calendars and to-do lists. While some people can make use of a small, magnetic whiteboard on which to keep their grocery list, for instance, other people think in pictures, and whiteboards can be an integral part of their visual thought process. You need not limit your choices or your wallet to the whiteboards sold in stores and office supply stores. Here are some do-it-yourself ways to make an erasable whiteboard.
  1. Whiteboard Walls

    • It's hard to imagine a better brainstorming tool than an entire wall of whiteboard. You generally cannot buy whiteboard larger than four feet high, but you can turn your walls into a whiteboard with a little creativity. Tile board is a press-board product very similar to that used in whiteboards. Intended for use in bathrooms to repel moisture like a tile, it's very similar to the inside of a shower. You can buy it in 4' x 8' sheets, just like standard plywood. The perimeter can be screwed to your wall into studs, but liquid construction adhesive is, perhaps, the best fastening method.

    Wall Paint and Decals

    • Tile board is not the only way to turn your walls into whiteboards. Whiteboard paint is now available. The paint must be applied to a very smooth surface to make use of it. So, if you're going over sheet rock, you want to remove any texture, but it works. A similar effect can be done with whiteboard decals. They have a clear, non-porous finish you can wipe clean over and over.

    Plexi-Glass and Glass

    • You can use glass and plexi-glass to make whiteboards, too. Buy or cut to the shape you want. Then, rather than mount it in a picture frame, screw the picture frame directly to the wall, making sure the screws anchor into studs. Before you screw the frame and glass to the wall, mark off the perimeter and paint the section of wall behind it white so it will show through.

    Doors

    • Wall space is at a premium in small rooms -- but even the smallest rooms have doors. Choose a door with a glass pane and you can make your door double as a whiteboard. Paint the outside of the door's glass white -- the same color as the door. It may appear to be a wood-panel door. The white will show through, giving you a door with a built-in whiteboard.
