How to Fix a Stuck Drawer That Will Not Close

Your cabinet, desk or dresser drawers may be stuck because of too many items inside, or there may be a mechanical problem with the slides. When this happens, the drawer may not close or open completely. Items that fall between the inside back of the furniture and the drawer can also prevent the drawer from closing all the way. Try some simple repairs to fix and close your drawers.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the drawer from the furniture and take out all items.

    • 2

Reach inside the opening for the drawer toward the back of the furniture to feel for any obstacle interferring with the back-and-forth movement of the drawer. If you find anything, remove it.

    • 3

Insert the drawer and push with the knob or handle. Keep troubleshooting if the drawer will not shut.

    • 4

Take out the drawer to check the slides on the sides. If either slide is bent or dented, it will not fit properly into the matching slide inside the furniture.

    • 5

Bend the slides to their correct shape, using pliers. Refer to the slides on another drawer in the furniture for guidance.

    • 6

Tighten all loose hardware with a screwdriver.

    • 7

Spray lubricant along the grooves on each slide, then reinsert the drawer into the furniture. Work the drawer back and forth several times to spread the lubricant, making it easier to open and shut the drawer.
