How to Attach Legs to a Desk

Purchased desk legs often have installation holes that make the assembly process simple. However, building your own desk using basic plywood for the surface and precut legs presents some difficulties in assembling the desk. Wooden dowel joints offer a simple method of attaching desk legs to the desk surface without any visible screws or nail heads.

Things You'll Need

  • 1/2 inch drill bit
  • Drill
  • 1/2 inch thick, 1 inch long dowel joints, 4 joints
  • Pencil
  • Ruler
  • Wood glue
  • Table legs
  • Desk surface

Instructions

    • 1

Place the desk on the floor with the face-side down, so the bottom is facing upwards. Place one leg on the desk, where you wish to attach it so the leg stands up in the air. Use the pencil to draw around the leg, to create a rectangle or square the same size as the leg itself. Repeat this step for all four legs on the desk.

    • 2

Use the ruler to draw an even "X" through all the rectangles or squares drawn on the desk. Repeat the "X" pattern on each of legs, so the ends attached to the desk itself have "Xs."

    • 3

Drill a small hole in the middle of the Xs on the desk using the drill and the 1/2 inch drill bit. The hole must be very small and not protrude the desk surface. Take each of the wooden legs and drill small holes in the middle of the "Xs." Drill approximately 3/4 inch long holes for the 1 inch long dowels.

    • 4

Insert some wood glue into the hole in the wooden desk legs along with on the ends. Insert the 1 inch long dowel joint into the hole and press firmly. Turn the leg upside down and insert the visible dowel end into the hole on the desk. Line up the leg with the pencil line drawn in Step 1. Apply pressure on the desk leg. Repeat this step with the remaining three legs.

Turn the table right side up when the glue has dried. Apply some pressure on each corner to ensure the legs attached properly.
