How to Make Grommet Holes for Desks

Grommets are rubber or plastic inserts that are placed inside a hole to accommodate various computer component wires and power cords. This allows the wires and cords to be inserted through the hole to keep the cords and wires organized. If you want to drill a grommet hole in your desk, you will only need a few tools and some other items. The size of the grommet will determine the hole size, as will the bit, but it should be at least 1 inch in diameter.

Instructions

  Clear off the desk to avoid getting dust and debris on your possessions.

  Insert a hole cutter drill bit, at least 1-inch diameter, into a drill of the same diameter as the plastic or rubber gromme. Then put on eye protection along with a dust mask.

  Plug the drill into an electrical outlet, then hold the drill at a 90 degree angle against the desk.

  Pull the trigger on the drill and drive the hole drill bit through the desk. Once the bit has penetrated to the other side, back out the drill bit and let it and the desk cool.

  Sand the hole to smooth it using medium-grit sandpaper, removing any splinters and evening up the hole.

  Fit a correctly sized grommet insert into the hole in the desk and then tap in with a rubber mallet to make flush with the desk.
