How to Clean Office Upholstery

Office furniture is made with a variety of upholstery materials, each with its proper method of cleaning. If you have the manufacturer's instruction manual or cleaning instructions, always follow those directions. If you don't, clean the upholstery according to the material of which it's made. Try to clean your office's upholstery at least weekly, depending on how much use it gets. If something spills on the furniture, clean it immediately to prevent staining.

Instructions

    • 1

Vacuum fabric or mesh upholstery using an upholstery hose attachment, not a brush attachment. Clean stains with a solvent approved by the manufacturing company. Locate the manufacturer's cleaning code, usually found beneath a side or cushion. Test a small and hidden portion of the fabric first to check for colorfastness. Dry-clean fabric upholstery if the fabric is at least 50 percent cotton.

    • 2

Use a dry, soft cloth to dust and clean leather upholstery. If the dust is thick, wipe the leather with a wet rag, then immediately dry the leather with a dry cloth.

    • 3

Use soap and warm water to clean vinyl upholstery. A brush or washcloth works well. Dry the vinyl upholstery immediately. For stubborn stains, use rubbing alcohol.

    • 4

Polish stainless steel with a polish designed for metal or stainless steel, applying it with a cotton cloth. You do not need to wash the stainless steel first. Use a dry cotton cloth to dry the polish.
